Crossword Genius

African fish named in film when caught by sailors (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rwandan

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'african' is the definition.
(Rwanda is an African country)

'fish named in film when caught by sailors' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'film' could be 'w' (W, film about George W Bush) and 'w' is present in the answer.
'caught' could be 'ran' (running is a kind of catching) and 'ran' is located in the remaining letters.
The remaining letters 'dan' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rwandan that I've seen before include "African chap" , "Kigali native, perhaps" , "African native" , "Eg, a native of Kigali" , "From a central African country" .)
