Crossword Genius

Ancient character I attached to British monarchy (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

brunei

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'monarchy' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'ancient character i attached to british' is the wordplay.
'ancient character' becomes 'rune' (I've seen this in another clue).
'attached to' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'british' becomes 'b' (abbreviation e.g. in BBC).
'rune'+'i'='runei'
'runei' after 'b' is 'BRUNEI'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for brunei that I've seen before include "Commonwealth country" , "Oil-rich country of Southeast Asia" , "Ill" , "Sultanate on the island of Borneo" , "Sultanate in northwest Borneo" .)
