Bird whose noise is only partly heard? (7)
I believe the answer is:
buzzard
'bird' is the definition.
(buzzard is a kind of bird)
'noise is only partly heard?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'noise' could be 'buzz' (I have seen 'Noise of bees ' mean 'buzz' so perhaps 'noise' could also mean 'buzz') and 'buzz' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ard' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'whose' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for buzzard that I've seen before include "American vulture or European hawk" , "Raptor" , "Predatory hawk" , "See 20" , "Large hawk-like bird of prey" .)
