I believe the answer is:
go to pot
'deteriorate' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'try for break?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'try' could be 'go' (both can mean an attempt) and 'go' is present in the answer.
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pot' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
