Crossword Genius

Hand stopping a ball going in (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

admittance

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'going in' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'hand stopping a ball' is the wordplay.
'hand' becomes 'mitt' (synonyms).
'stopping' indicates putting letters inside (stopping can mean blocking a gap).
'ball' becomes 'dance' (ball can mean an event for dancing).
'a'+'dance'='adance'
'mitt' placed into 'adance' is 'ADMITTANCE'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for admittance that I've seen before include "What bouncer controls" , "Letting in" , "gives one the right to be there" , "Entry" , "Right to enter" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sunday Times and The Times.
