Old Arab hospital admitting certain type of people? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

saracen

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'old arab' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'hospital admitting certain type of people?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'people?' could be 'race' (people can mean a national group or race) and 'race' is found in the answer.
'hospital' could be 'san' (short for sanatorium) and 'san' is found in the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for saracen that I've seen before include "Arab or Muslim at time of the Crusades" , "Ear scan (anag.)" , "Muslim defender in Crusades" , "Crusader's foe" , "Muslim opposing the Crusades" .)
