Crossword Genius

Old pope inside rather than outside church, and disrobed (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

innocent

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'old pope' is the definition.
'innocent' can be an answer for 'pope' (I've seen this before). I am not certain of the 'old' bit.

'inside rather than outside church and disrobed' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'inside' could be 'in' and 'in' is located in the answer.
'church' could be 'ce' (Church of England) and 'ce' is located in the answer.
'outside' could be 'non' and 'non' is found within the leftover letters.
A single letter 't' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for innocent that I've seen before include "Guiltless or guileless" , "Without blame or guilt" , "Pope" , "white" , "not intending to cause offence?" .)
