Plaits braided either side of one girl's head? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pigtails

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'plaits' is the definition.
(pigtail is a kind of plait)

'braided either side of one girl's head?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'side' could be 'tail' (tail is a kind of side) and 'tail' is found within the answer.
'one' could be 'i' (Roman numeral) and 'i' is located in the answer.
'girl's' could be 'gs' and 'gs' is found in the leftover letters.
A single letter 'p' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pigtails that I've seen before include "Plaited ropes of hair at back of head" , "Plaited hair style" , "Queues" , "Plaits of braided hair" .)
