Crossword Genius

Roasting chicken, having removed its head (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

earful

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'roasting chicken' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'removed its head' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'head' could be 'ear' (I have seen 'Head of corn' mean 'ear' so perhaps 'head' could also mean 'ear') and 'ear' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ful' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'having' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for earful that I've seen before include "Volley of abuse, criticism" , "harangue" , "Spoken reprimand" , "Rocket" , "Load of abuse (received)" .)
