I believe the answer is:

off drive

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'shot' is the definition.
(type of cricket shot)

'away on a trip' is the wordplay.
'away' becomes 'off' (synonyms).
'on a trip' becomes 'drive' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'off'+'drive'='OFF-DRIVE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for off drive that I've seen before include "One sent to cover" , "Stroke of a cricketer" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
