'way' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both locations as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'down' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'down' could be 'out' (similar in meaning) and 'out' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'sh' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for south that I've seen before include "Antarctica" , "Direction to the right of sunrise" , "Down on a map" , "Cardinal point" , "1949 musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, made into a film in 1958" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
