Ways to bear love and poignancy (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pathos

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'poignancy' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'ways to bear love' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'love' could be 'o' (love means zero in tennis) and 'o' is found in the answer.
'ways' could be 'paths' ('path' can be a synonym of 'way') and 'paths' is found within the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pathos that I've seen before include "Pitifulness" , "Quality evoking pity or sadness" , "Quality that arouses pity or sadness" , "Quality inspiring pity" , "Pitiful quality" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
