What soldiers defending a garrison need? (9)
I believe the answer is:
fortitude
'a garrison need?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.
'what soldiers defending' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'soldiers' could be 'or' (Other Ranks) and 'or' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for fortitude that I've seen before include "Enduring courage" , "Courage in bearing pain or trouble" , "Mental and emotional strength" , "Courage in adversity" , "Red outfit for courage" .)
