When a girl is just about free for the weekend? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

friday

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'when' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a girl is just about free for the weekend?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' is within the answer.
'free' could be 'rid' (to be free of something is to be rid of it) and 'rid' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'fy' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for friday that I've seen before include "God is thanked for this" , "Robinson Crusoe's manservant" , "Muslim Sabbath" , "POETS day" , "'Robinson Crusoe' character" .)
