Workers' appearance for informal vote (4,2,5)
I believe the answer is:
show of hands
'informal vote' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'workers' appearance' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'workers'' could be 'hands' (hand is a kind of worker) and 'hands' is found within the answer.
'appearance' could be 'show' (synonyms) and 'show' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'of' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'for' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for show of hands that I've seen before include "Public vote" , "at end of poker betting" , "Vote for possible action" , "Form of voting" , "have cards on display?" .)
