Crossword Genius

A better piano with jazz vocalist's singing style (1,8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

a cappella

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'singing style' is the definition.
'a cappella' can be an answer for 'singing' (I have seen 'Unaccompanied singing ' mean 'a cappella' so perhaps 'singing' could also mean 'a cappella'). I am unsure of the 'style' bit.

'a better piano with jazz vocalist's' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
'better' could be 'cap' (I've seen this before) and 'cap' is present in the answer.
'piano' could be 'p' (musical abbreviation) and 'p' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ella' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for a cappella that I've seen before include "Sung without instruments" , "Unaccompanied singing" , "Sung without instrumental accompaniment" , "Of choral music, unaccompanied" , "type of singing" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
