A bird others turn to? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

skua

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a bird' is the definition.
(skua is a kind of bird)

'others turn to?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'turn' could be 'u' (a 'U-turn' is a kind of turn) and 'u' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ska' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for skua that I've seen before include "Large relative of the gull" , "Large predatory seabird" , "One preying on gulls" , "Large brown seabird" , "Large predatory bird" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
