Crossword Genius

A chopped pungent savoury jelly (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aspic

'savoury jelly' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a chopped pungent' is the wordplay.
'chopped' means to remove the last letter.
'pungent' becomes 'spicy' ('spicy' can be similar in meaning to 'pungent').
'spicy' with its last letter removed is 'spic'.
'a'+'spic'='ASPIC'

(Other definitions for aspic that I've seen before include "stock production" , "Jelly made with fish or meat stock" , "garnish" , "Savoury meat or fish jelly" , "Edible jelly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
