Crossword Genius

A corny little collection (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sheaf

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'collection' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Collection of papers' mean 'sheaf' so perhaps 'collection' could also mean 'sheaf')

I don't understand how the rest of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sheaf that I've seen before include "Bundle, of grain stalks say" , "Bundle of cereal plants" , "Bundle as of arrows or corn stalks" , "Reaper's bundle" , "set of papers" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
