A fishy end? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tail

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'end?' is the definition.
(I know that tail is a type of end)

'a fishy' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' is within the answer.
The remaining letters 'til' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tail that I've seen before include "Follow the caudal appendage" , "Feebler batsmen" , "Dog - end" , "Hindmost part" , "Follow -- rear end" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
