Crossword Genius

A fishy member of the choir? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bass

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'member of the choir?' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'a fishy' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'a' is within the answer.
The remaining letters 'bss' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bass that I've seen before include "bottom of sound?" , "Performer" , "Fish for the low-voiced" , "Lowest male singer" , "Type of fish" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
