Crossword Genius

A hot drink placed before each northern Greek (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

achaean

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'greek' is the definition.
(I know that Achaean is a type of greek)

'a hot drink placed before each northern' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is found within the answer.
'hot' could be 'h' (abbreviation eg on taps) and 'h' is present in the answer.
'before' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for achaean that I've seen before include "about ancient Greeks" , "Ancient Greek" , "provincial Greek" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
