Crossword Genius

A manoeuvre by RAF some way off (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

afar

'way off' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'a manoeuvre by raf some' is the wordplay.
'a manoeuvre' is an anagram indicator.
'by' says to put letters next to each other.
'some' becomes 'a'.
'raf' put after 'a' is 'araf'.
'araf' is an anagram of 'AFAR'.

(Other definitions for afar that I've seen before include "A long distance away" , "Pull out at a distance" , "long way back" , "Distant parts" , "Not in this neighbourhood" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
