A metal girl shimmied without all that jazz (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ragtime

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'that jazz' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a metal girl shimmied without all' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
'metal' could be 'ti' (Ti is an example) and 'ti' is present in the answer.
'girl' could be 'g' and 'g' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ragtime that I've seen before include "Syncopated music genre" , "Kind of music" , "Scott Joplin music style" , "Syncopated music form" , "Form of jazz with a two-four rhythm" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
