Crossword Genius

A new attempt by artist to produce material (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

angora

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'produce material' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'a new attempt by artist' is the wordplay.
'new' becomes 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament).
'attempt' becomes 'go' (go is a kind of attempt).
'by' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'artist' becomes 'RA' (Royal Academician, member of Royal Academy of Arts).
'a'+'n'+'go'+'ra'='ANGORA'

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for angora that I've seen before include "Goat producing mohair" , "Yarn or fabric made from goat hair" , "Fine yarn from hair of goats" , "Wool from hair of goats" , "Yarn made from hair of goats or rabbits" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
