Crossword Genius

A new sixpence king dropped for a soldier (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

anzac

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'for a soldier' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Antipodean soldier ' mean 'anzac' so perhaps 'soldier' could also mean 'anzac')

'a new sixpence king dropped' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'zac' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for anzac that I've seen before include "digger" , "Commonwealth soldier" , "Old warrior" , "World War One Australian or NZ soldier" , "Planet rotates about it" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
