Crossword Genius

A number wearing symbol of Aviator shades (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

awnings

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'aviator shades' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'a number wearing symbol' is the wordplay.
'number' becomes 'n' (n can represent any number).
'wearing' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'symbol' becomes 'wings' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'n' inserted into 'wings' is 'wnings'.
'a'+'wnings'='AWNINGS'

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for awnings that I've seen is " Canopies for shelter".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
