A small dry area (5)

I believe the answer is:
islet
'a small' is the definition.
I know that 'small' relates to this answer. I also know that both the answer and definition are singular nouns
'dry area' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'area' could be 'isle' (I have seen 'Area of land' mean 'isle' so perhaps 'area' could also mean 'isle') and 'isle' is found within the answer.
A single letter 't' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for islet that I've seen before include "Minor key" , "Eyot, key" , "One of Langerhans's" , "Rockall, for example" , "small key?" .)
