Crossword Genius

A striking tree? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

birch

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'a striking' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'tree?' is the second definition.
(I know that birch is a type of tree)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for birch that I've seen before include "Flog" , "Wood" , "Tree with silvery bark" , "Flogging rod" , "Hardy tree" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
