Crossword Genius

Abolish article from a yearbook (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

annul

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'abolish' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'article from a yearbook' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'article' could be 'an' (English indefinite article) and 'an' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for annul that I've seen before include "Countermand" , "Declare void" , "Scrap" , "Cancel, revoke" , "Nullify" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
