Adapt to onset of monarchy after unending blame (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

accustom

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'adapt' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'onset of monarchy after unending blame' is the wordplay.
'onset of monarchy' becomes 'tom' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'after' says to put letters next to each other.
'unending' means to remove the last letter (the word doesn't have its end letter).
'blame' becomes 'accuse ' (I've seen this before).
'accuse' with its final letter removed is 'accus'.
'tom' after 'accus' is 'ACCUSTOM'.

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for accustom that I've seen before include "get used to" , "Familiarise" , "Make familiar with" , "get one inured to" , "Maybe reconcile" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
