Crossword Genius

Adequate artist depicts a vegetable (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

okra

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'vegetable' is the definition.
(I know that okra is a type of vegetable)

'adequate artist depicts a' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'artist' could be 'ra' (Royal Academician, member of Royal Academy of Arts) and 'ra' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ok' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for okra that I've seen before include "Bhindi or lady's finger" , "Tropical plant with edible pods" , "Ladies' fingers with edible pods" , "old ladies' fingers" , "Edible seed pods" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
