African dish provided by two fellow Americans? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

couscous

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'african dish' is the definition.
(wheat in North African cuisine)

'two fellow americans?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'fellow' could be 'co' (eg a co-worker is a fellow worker) and 'co' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'provided by' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for couscous that I've seen before include "Form of semolina" , "African dish of crushed steamed semolina" , "Wheat grain (N. Afr.)" , "food" , "African dish of crushed and steamed wheat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
