African people married when without a match? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

masai

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'african' is the definition.
(the Masai are an ethnic group of Kenya)

'people married when without a match?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'married' could be 'm' and 'm' is found in the answer.
'when' could be 'as' (eg 'when I walked' means 'as I walked') and 'as' is found within the answer.
'a' is within the answer.
A single letter 'i' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for masai that I've seen before include "Well-known tribe of Eastern Africa" , "people are found" , "A semi-nomadic people of Kenya and Tanzania" , "African tribespeople" , "East African pastoralist" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
