After tea Newchurch left in sanctuary area? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

chancel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'area?' is the definition.
(I know that chancel is a type of area)

'after tea newchurch left in sanctuary' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'tea' could be 'cha' (cha is a type of tea) and 'cha' is found in the answer.
'left' could be 'l' (common abbreviation) and 'l' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for chancel that I've seen before include "where choir sits" , "Part of church near altar" , "what's behind the screen" , "church, partly" , "Part of church containing altar" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
