Crossword Genius

Agitation about mistake, losing both ends of iron (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ferrous

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'iron' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'agitation about mistake losing both ends of' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'mistake' could be 'err' (synonyms) and 'err' is found in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for ferrous that I've seen is " Containing iron".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
