Crossword Genius

Aisle? Clear a path! (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gangway

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'aisle?' is the definition.
(I know that gangway is a aisle)

'clear a path' is the wordplay.
'clear' becomes 'gang' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'a path' becomes 'way' (way is a kind of path).
'gang'+'way'='GANGWAY'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gangway that I've seen before include "Let us get past" , "Movable bridge from ship to land" , "means to secure passage on ship" , "Aisle between seats" , "part of ship" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
