Crossword Genius

Almost burn a twisted ornament (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

torc

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a twisted ornament' is the definition.
'torc' can be an answer for 'ornament' (I've seen this before). I'm not sure about the 'a twisted' bit.

'almost burn' is the wordplay.
'almost' means to remove the last letter (most of the word but not all of it).
'burn' becomes 'torch' (torching is a kind of burning).
'torch' with its final letter taken away is 'TORC'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for torc that I've seen before include "One gets into a twist" , "Rigid circular necklace" , "ancient necklace" , "Metal neck ornament of ancient Britons" , "Metallic neck ornament" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
