Almost convinced benefit should support redundant (7)
I believe the answer is:
surplus
'redundant' is the definition.
(I know that redundant can be written as surplus)
'almost convinced benefit' is the wordplay.
'almost' means to remove the last letter (most of the word but not all of it).
'convinced' becomes 'sure' (similar in meaning).
'benefit' becomes 'plus' (both can mean an advantageous feature).
'sure' with its last letter taken off is 'sur'.
'sur'+'plus'='SURPLUS'
'should support' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for surplus that I've seen before include "Excess, extra" , "superfluity" , "Excess, overstock" , "balance" , "Amount left over" .)
