American liberty? Not American high point (8)
I believe the answer is:
altitude
'american liberty?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.
'not american high point' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'high' could be 'alt' (I've seen this before) and 'alt' is found within the answer.
'point' could be 'e' (E is an example) and 'e' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for altitude that I've seen before include "Height, elevation" , "high place" , "Elevation above sea-level" , "Height above the earth's surface" , "Loftiness" .)
