Amphibian as returned by fellow between foreign articles (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

salamander

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'amphibian' is the definition.
(salamander is a kind of amphibian)

'as returned by fellow between foreign articles' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'as' could be 'ala' (French 'a la' - 'in the style of') and 'ala' is found in the answer.
'fellow' could be 'man' (fellow can mean a man) and 'man' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for salamander that I've seen before include "poker" , "portable stove" , "amphibious creature" , "Tailed amphibian" , "Fiery spirit" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
