Crossword Genius

Ancient writer's revolutionary main work (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aesop

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'ancient writer's' is the definition.
'aesop' can be an answer for 'writer's' (I've seen this before). I'm unsure of the 'ancient' bit.

'revolutionary main work' is the wordplay.
'revolutionary' says the letters should be written backwards (letters revolve around).
'main' becomes 'sea' (the main is an old name for the sea).
'work' becomes 'op' (abbreviation for opus).
'sea' in reverse letter order is 'aes'.
'aes'+'op'='AESOP'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for aesop that I've seen before include "classic author" , "Ancient Greek author of moral tales" , "Greek storyteller" , "Fable-teller" , "his writings were fabulous" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
