Angrily took food to excess (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

intemperate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'excess' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'angrily took food' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'took' could be 'ate' (eating is a kind of taking) and 'ate' is found in the answer.
'food' could be 'e' (E is an example) and 'e' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for intemperate that I've seen before include "Lacking self-control" , "unrestrained" , "wild" , "indulging to excess" , "consuming alcohol to excess" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
