Crossword Genius

Animal found in corner by hotel border (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hedgehog

'animal' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'corner by hotel border' is the wordplay.
'corner' becomes 'hog' (I've seen this in other clues).
'by' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'hotel' becomes 'h' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.).
'border' becomes 'edge' ('edge' can be a synonym of 'border'**).
'h'+'edge'='hedge'
'hog' put after 'hedge' is 'HEDGEHOG'.

'found in' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for hedgehog that I've seen before include "Woodland animal" , "Prickly garden animal" , "one is far from spineless" , "Nocturnal mammal" , "Prickly rodent" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
