Crossword Genius

Animal heard with a song, to be reasonable? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gopher

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'animal' is the definition.
(I have seen 'small animal' mean 'gopher' so perhaps 'animal' could also mean 'gopher')

'heard with a song to be reasonable?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'be' could be 'go' (going is a kind of being) and 'go' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gopher that I've seen before include "Burrowing rodent of north and central America" , "American burrowing rodent or ground squirrel" , "Burrowing animal - kind of wood" , "Burrowing rodent with cheek pouches" , "US ground squirrel" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
