Animal in love with rough skin? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rhino

'animal' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'in love with rough skin?' is the wordplay.
'love' becomes 'o' (In tennis, 'love' means 'zero').
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'skin?' suggests removing the centre (I've seen 'skin of' mean this).
'rough' with its centre removed is 'rh'.
'in'+'o'='ino'
'ino' put after 'rh' is 'RHINO'.

(Other definitions for rhino that I've seen before include "wild beast" , "African/Asian ungulate" , "I may make fearsome charges" , "one still charges in Africa" , "chargeable > 11 [LOLLY]?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
