Crossword Genius

Animals run into stakes (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

antelopes

'animals' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'run into stakes' is the wordplay.
'run' becomes 'lope' (loping is a kind of running).
'into' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'stakes' becomes 'antes' (ante is a kind of stake).
'lope' put within 'antes' is 'ANTELOPES'.

(Other definitions for antelopes that I've seen before include "Wild animals" , "Springboks, say" , "Gazelles, impalas etc" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
