Announce woman’s with a lord (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

herald

'announce' is the definition.
(I know that announce can be written as herald)

'woman's with a lord' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'woman's' could be 'her' (belonging to a woman) and 'her' is present in the answer.
'a' is present in the answer.
'lord' could be 'ld' (abbreviation for the aristocratic title) and 'ld' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for herald that I've seen before include "Announcer - forerunner" , "One making proclamations - harbinger" , "Usher in; proclaim" , "Proclaim the approach of, like announcer of old" , "College of Arms official" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
