Crossword Genius

Antique pamphlet clipping (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

extract

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'clipping' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'antique pamphlet' is the wordplay.
'antique' becomes 'ex' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'pamphlet' becomes 'tract' (synonyms).
'ex'+'tract'='EXTRACT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for extract that I've seen before include "Sample of larger work" , "Citation" , "Find out" , "Passage selected from a larger work" , "Uproot by force" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
