Apply for an introductory job? (3,2)
I believe the answer is:
put in
'apply' is the definition.
(I know that put in is a more specific form of apply)
'an introductory job?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'an' could be 'i' (Roman numeral for one) and 'i' is present in the answer.
'job?' could be 'put' (jobbing is a kind of putting) and 'put' is found within the answer.
A single letter 'n' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'for' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for put in that I've seen before include "Insert" , "being asked to bat" , "Russian president" , "rugby move?" , "Deposit" .)
